Do you celebrate the Day of the Dead? Perhaps you’re bored with the Americanised Halloween and look to Mexico for a healthier, more positive view of the dead? Or perhaps you just like colourful skulls! Either way, this necklace is for you!
Inspired by the Día de Muertos celebrations, this necklace features carved howlite skulls in many colours, connected together with individual aluminium rings, woven together in a chainmaille pattern called Candy Cane Cord. (How fitting, right?)
The necklace is roughly 25 inches (63cm) long, which will fit over your head with no need for a clasp. It is wonderfully unisex – anyone can take part in these celebrations!
I confess I have no ancestry in Mexico nor any cultural connection to this celebration, however ever since I found out about it I have loved the concept and I think it’s the healthiest way of viewing death in modern society. I wanted to make a piece of jewellery that would celebrate and remember the dead rather than just doing the “spooky” Halloween thing.
I make all my items to a high standard, the Viking way. But if you have any issues please do not hesitate to contact me.
